Abstract
Image of plaque on display at Regina's Co-op Refinery. Text reads: "World's first Co-op refinery." In smaller print: "The Great Depression of the early nineteen thirties caused farm prices to fall while farm fuel costs remained high. A small group of courageous farmers from ten petroleum co-ops in the Regina-Moose Jaw-Weyburn area raised $32,000 to build, on this site, the first co-operative oil refinery in the world. It went 'on stream' on May 27th, 1935. Its success was a dynamic factor in the rapid growth of the consumer co-operative movement on the prairies." Printed beneath: "First board of directors elected November 13, 1934:" Names of the board of directors are not included in the photo.
