Amphitheatre at Carthage

Dates to c. 1st century BCE to the 6th century CE. It was built in two stages: the first during the Augustan period 27 BCE-14 CE and by 136-139 CE, accommodated 22,200 spectators, and the second consisted of an expansion in the 2nd century CE, now accommodating 44,400 spectators, finally measuring to approximately 15,680 m2, with the arena occupying 1860 m2 (Bomgardner 2001: p.134-135, 191). Remains found in and around the arena include: white marble sculptures of various deities including Diana, Bacchus, Hercules, and Neptune, as well as 55 curse tablets (Bomgardner 2001: p.138).
