Abstract
Image of a old, broken-down boxcar. Exhibit sign says, "This box car was built by the CPR c1882 and used during the construction of the transcontinental railway. It is quite probably the oldest artefact on the Museum grounds. Because track laying advanced so quickly, it was not uncommon to utilize old box cars as temporary stations, (they sometimes became permanent) from which to operate the company's business and control the movement of trains. That was the fate of this box car and it was used as a portable station at Retallack, BC. When that line was abandoned in 1955 this box car was moved to Sandon, BC in the mid 1990's. It was donated to the Museum in 2004. The challenge now is to decide how to preserve and interpret the significance of this valuable artifact of railway history."
